Song Service

The scripture is rich with praise unto God being expressed in musical form. Although the tunes have not survived, the lyrics to many songs are recorded throughout the Bible and were written by prominent figures such as Moses, Miriam, David, Mary, and possibly even Paul. The word “Psalm” means “song,” which is to say that the entire book is an ancient hymnal.

Psalm 150:3-5 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

Church Rock Bands, Rap Groups, Country Western, and More

As a fellowship with a vision to reach unsaved and unchurched people, most of our churches have regular concert scenes with groups that perform rock, rap, country, hip hop, latin, and virtually any other style of music. Some bands will perform secular “covers”–songs by other secular artists–by changing the lyrics to contain a Christian message. David appears to have used the same technique in Psalm 9, which many Bibles preface as being sung “to the tune of ‘Death of a Son.’” (As an aside, that original “cover” song has been forever lost, but there are two points to observe: 1) The dark title implies that it was probably a lamentation, and 2) The song was obviously not spiritual in its original form since David changed its words.) And the fruit of our music and concert scenes speaks for itself as thousands of people have accepted Christ through that ministry, including the author of this page.
